The June death of a 12-year-old girl run over as she bicycled home from San Jose's Hoover Middle School horrified Michelle Takeuchi. Her 10-year-old son bikes to and from Los Alamitos Elementary in Almaden, where a single pair of police crossing guards guides kids through a daily crush of cars.
